50/50/50: Breakthrough the Negativity and Conquer the Game of Sales

When James Lawrence (aka the Iron Cowboy) announced his plan to complete 50 Iron man distances in 50 consecutive days in all 50 states, the only person who believed that he could pull it off was James himself. An Iron Man distance consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. This is considered a lifetime achievement of course, and as the competition unfolds, Lawerence’s journey is filled with controversy, misery, extreme sleep deprivation, mental and physical exhaustion, tropical storms, internal bleeding, and so much more.

The reason why this documentary, Iron Cowboy: The Story of the 50.50.50 is relevant to our industry is that being a driven, motivated, and an inspirational salesperson can sometimes have unfavorable effects on us, and it’s vital to remember to keep going and stay positive - despite outside distractions.

It’s easy to veer away from the positive and get lost in the negative, and my biggest takeaway to stay resilient. To never let negativity derail what you set out to do. To stick with your goals, even if (like Lawerence) breakdowns are a part of that journey.

You can rebound quite quickly, I assure you. Here are some additional takeaways:

In a transactional world, be transformational

Move-in the opposite direction of the world’s negative pull

Have a strong support group of your biggest cheerleaders

Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.  

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.  

Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.  

Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. 

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today will often be forgotten.  

Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.  

Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  

It was never between you and them anyway
