TED Tuesday: Is social media making us less sociable?

It's Tuesday, which means it's TEDday. I'm a big fan of TED videos, so every Tuesday I comb through my favorites and pass one along.

This video features psychologist and sociologist Sherry Turkle, who examines the effect that technology—particularly texting, email, and social media—has on our face-to-face, human-to-human interactions.

Sherry says, "I believe ... technology appeals to us most where we are most vulnerable. And we are vulnerable. We're lonely, but we're afraid of intimacy. And so from social networks to sociable robots, we're designing technologies that will give us the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship. We turn to technology to help us feel connected in ways we can comfortably control. But we're not so comfortable. We are not so much in control."

It's an interesting take on the subject. Check out Sherry's TED talk and share your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
